Are Polypropylene Bags Really Green?

Nowadays just about everyone is becoming more and more "green". People are starting to take the time to get involved with things like recycling, ecology, renewable resource products like windmills and solar panels. However, not everyone actually knows how to recycle specific items such as glass, newspapers, metal, plastic, textiles, and packing materials like polypropylene bags, clear poly bags, poly bag packaging, peanuts, etc. For the most part, companies have made it easier for us to recycle.

For instance, the USPS stores and a lot of companies that ship products to you now use peanuts that actually ARE biodegradable - all you have to do is add water and it's completely safe to pour the liquid down your kitchen drain or sewer. Can't exactly do this with the old peanuts now can you! As for the polypropylene bags, clear poly bags, or poly bag packaging this might start to blur the lines a little more. Are these types of materials recyclable? Well, compared to newspapers, brown bags and other paper bags, a polypropylene bag has two major advantages.

Number one the bags require about a third of the free energy to produce the bags and only about one tenth of energy to recycle! Secondly, these bags are considered "green" because they do NOT create pollution or waste during production or during the breakdown of the recycling option. Whereas with something like paper bags or brown bags, it takes chemicals in order to breakdown the wood that the bags are made up of.
